Doug, my friend who has been selling on ebay for some time has discovered a niche market in Amazon that has generated a lot of new business for her. It seems the links they use to bring retail customers into the auctions by subjects make it so people looking for certain books or subjects also get to see auction items in their searches.

She's being very selective about what goes in, and she says she has to fiddle around with the subject keywords to get the right hits, but the Amazon system lets you fiddle with it before you actually list.

The other benefit that really makes sense to me is that you have to be a real person with a real credit card to even register at amazon. No 12 year-olds with hotmail addresses playing with bidding and disappearing. I've bought several things from ebay sellers when the phantom high-bidder failed to respond and I was the next highest bidder. Now I always look at the other bidders and what they have bid on before I place a bid.

Something I discovered on Amazon that I'm not sure I like is that you can't go in at the last minute and "snipe" to get a bargain. They extend the auction if you bid in the last 10 minutes. Good for sellers, I guess - more like a live auction, but sniping is actually a lot of fun unless you lose out on something you really want.

Of course, now I find I'm spending too much time on the sites . . . this is not good. :^)
