NEW YORK -- Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst Mark Edelstone raised his earnings estimates and price target on Intel Corp. (INTC), saying the chip giant is in position to capitalize on positive personal-computer build rates.

According to a source at the firm, Edelstone took up fiscal 1999 earnings-per-share estimates to $2.30 from $2.25, and fiscal 2000 estimates to $2.60 from $2.55. He raised his 12-month price target on the stock to 95 from 80, the source said.

Intel stock closed at 81 1/6 Thursday.

Edelstone noted that PC build rates have picked up sharply since mid- to late-second quarter, Morgan Stanley said.

Intel Investors - MERCED is ALIVE !

"Merced silicon happens: Linux runs, NT doesn't"

This article from the YUK Register suggests that the new MERCED chip is highly functional and is already running the 64 bit LINUX OS - although 64 Bit WinNT is still has problems (can anyone spell MICROSOFT ?).

I have received independent confirmation that there is a LOT OF TRUTH to the YUK REGISTER article.

The MERCED is alive and well at Intel.

Merced silicon happens: Linux runs, NT doesn't

Reliable sources close to Intel's plans say that the company has produced first silicon samples of the processor in its fabrication plants.

Intel has struggled to produce working silicon for some time, with various stops and starts, as reported here previously on numerous occasions.

But while the news may be good for Intel, Microsoft is already gnashing its teeth.

Because the Linux operating system is already running on the silicon while Microsoft's Win64 software won't.

Microsoft Redmond has drafted in armies of developers in an attempt to sort out the embarrassing fact, the sources said.

Intel has always said it is software agnostic, but actually will use any grist to make its chip mill run the faster. ®

Paul, RE: Is this the "upcoming Edelstone DOWNGRADE" you referred to ?

No; as I stated, if the industry scenario that he anticipates unfolds, that should happen in around 3 to 4 months, which would coincide with what he believes to be the peak of the current cycle.
