Leading SAN Vendors Promote Legato Systems' Open Celestra Architecture for SANs Industry Unites Behind Open, Integrated Approach to Deliver SAN Serverless Backup PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1999--Legato Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:LGTO - news), a leader in enterprise storage management software, today announced the formation of the Celestra Consortium. The Consortium promotes an open, integrated architecture for effective data movement and management of Storage Area Network (SAN) environments. Charter Consortium members include leading SAN vendors: 3PARdata, ADIC, Amdahl, Ancor, ATL, ATTO, Auspex, Brocade, Bull, Chaparral, CommVault Systems, Compaq, Computer Associates, ConvergeNet, DG/Clariion, EMC, Gadzoox, INLINE Corp., JNI, McDATA, MTI, NEC, Network Appliance, Novell, Overland Data, Pathlight, Siemens, SGI, Spectra Logic, SmartSAN, Troika, Vixel and Xiotech.
The Celestra Consortium provides a forum whereby Celestra's open data movement technology adoption is facilitated and integration efficiency is enhanced. IT customers benefit from the inherent product development efficiencies that result in more robust, feature-rich products brought to market faster.
Several of the Consortium members will implement the SCSI Extended Copy specification, which is based on the SCSI specification for third-party copy developed by the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA).
``Openness and interoperability between vendors are vital in order to provide meaningful, cost-effective solutions to the fast growing IT community and to exploit the rich market potential of SANs, which is estimated at $13 billion by 2002,' said Kent Smith, Legato System's executive vice president, Strategic Alliances.
Through the Consortium, Legato introduced its Celestra technology, an open and distributed architecture that optimizes data movement efficiency in SAN environments.
Paul Mason, vice president of Infrastructure Software Research for International Data Corporation (IDC), commented, ``This partnering by storage industry leaders makes possible open solutions for customers to address their backup window constraints and to provide a solution to their availability problems. Businesses will now be able to build efficient SAN architectures that allow fast and easy data movement.'
With its strong commitment to open standards and its co-authorship of both the Extended Copy specification and the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP), Legato is uniquely positioned to open the Celestra Consortium co-operative vendor forum. Through this Consortium, tools and support are offered to vendors to enable implementation of the SCSI Extended Copy specification. This includes a test tool kit and a joint certification and marketing support program, enabling consortium members to provide robust, interoperable solutions to market quickly and efficiently.
The Celestra Consortium forum was initiated by Legato but is a co-operative venture between leading SAN vendors. Members have a high degree of commitment and provide input and funding to support consortium integration efforts. The consortium was kicked off at an introductory meeting in Monterey, Calif. on June 15 and 16, 1999. |
