Compal to Launch Notebooks with Wireless Functions

Compal Electronics Inc. plans to launch notebook computers equipped
with wireless telecommunications functions and Internet access in 2001.
The company says it expects to produce 1.15 million notebook PCs this
year, up 57% from last year. Currently, Compal is the third-largest
notebook PC manufacturer in Taiwan, with sales from notebook PCs
accounting for around 80% of total revenue. It also produces liquid crystal
display monitors. In addition, Compal will make code division multiple
access (CDMA) mobile phones next year. Compal is in talks with a U.S.
telecommunications company to gain access to the needed technology. The
U.S. company was not identified.
