The 3com abort was not so much a failure of inveted R&D but for the most part backing off a forey outside of their competence. As for market estimates, be aware that they generally get generated by advocates. Maybe we'd all like that much money to get spent but at some point there is "conservation of dollars" so technology finds a way to increase volume without increasing cost, or at reduced total cost. So the extrapolation is from a set of prototypes to the dominant mode, presuming so many volume and pricing it perhaps at today's prices but whose budget does it come out of? Any stream of projected revenue that isn't intercepted by an established player is hopeful. SO Ancor might be disappointed but would they refund your investment? Don't think so.
