marking time until the "real thing" (i.e., bandwidth) gets here, and I don't agree that the real thing is in the far future. That I guess is the big question

Bandwidth is one of the dynamics. I think these ones below will also decide the fate of this tech (in order of importance):

1. Functionality: Thin Client Apps vs. FAT Client Apps.
2. Desktop Cost: PC vs. Thin Client.
3. Server Cost: Additional cost to maintain a fault tolerant server environment for thin client.
4. IT Trends: what do the tech heads like the most.

Also I do think there is a market for "kiosk" or palm like thin clients for web surfing, email and other communication type tasks (ie. stock trading) or as replacements for dumb terminals; 3270/vt220. I just don't see thin client pushing FAT out of the way because of #1.
