Seagate to invest $100 mln in 4 Thai units

BANGKOK, Aug 30 (Reuters) - U.S. electronics giant Seagate Technologies plans to invest 3.86 billion baht ($100 million) in four Thai disc drive production units, the Board of Investment said on Monday.

The board said in a statement the four projects, operated by Seagate's subsidiary, Seagate Technologies (Thailand), had a total production capacity of 30.72 million units of hard disk drive (HDD) a year.

It said the move was part of Seagate's production restructuring plan and was in response to growing demand for HDD, mainly driven by the Internet.

Global demand for HDD was expected to increase gradually every year and to reach 205 million units in 2001 with an estimated value of $28.15 billion, the statement quoted Trendfocus research agency as saying.
