Mike,

I'm not too concerned about the Gemstar/TVGIA thing. I don't think you can patent presentation (IE how the windows look on the screen) but I may be wrong. What you can patent is the algorithm underneath.

Perhaps you should review Gemstar's 150 issued and 300 pending patent portfolio. It is not a matter of cosmetics as you suggest. It covers, among other concerns, the transmission of data via VBI, HTML, audio, RF, cable, satellite and telephony. Where Wink will mail you a coupon Gemstar's technology will download the discount onto a smartcard for subsequent purchase at the consumers convenience. The RF technology will empower the consumer with a one-button e-commerce solution via the remote with no telephone, proprietary STBs or any wires involved. Stephens cut to the bottom line by characterizing Gemstar as a 'think tank' of world class engineers.

Not here to rain on your parade, just making a statement supporting my chosen investment vehicle in the ITV industry. Gemstar MUST have something going for it with exclusive agreements from Microsoft, AOL, Thomson, Sony, Americast, US(Q)West, Deutsche Telekom and others. And what of the joint ventures with MSNBC, Thomson, NBC, Dentsu (world largest advertising agency)and Tokyo News? Gemstar is not to be taken lightly in my opinion.

Regards
Stew
