U.S. Equity Preview includes news that broke after the markets closed. Friday's closing prices are included. The stock symbol is in parentheses after the company name. American International Group Inc. (AIG): The largest U.S. insurer by market value said it'll buy back as many as 10 million shares of its outstanding common stock. American International Group fell 1 11/16 to 97. American Medical Security Group (AMZ): The insurer, which sells health-care benefits to small businesses, said it'll appeal a $6.9 million federal jury decision that came yesterday. Skilstaf Inc. sued the company for alleged contract irregularities in 1996. American Medical fell 1/16 to 8 7/8. JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU): The No. 1 maker of parts for fiber-optic equipment in phone networks was raised to ``strong buy' by analyst Mark Langley at Gruntal & Co. Langley expects the stock to reach 185 within 12 months. JDS fell 5 5/16 to 110 3/16. Phelps Dodge Corp. (PD): The largest U.S. copper producer said it'll take its $2.57 billion bid for Asarco Inc. (AR) and Cyprus Amax Minerals Co. (CYM) directly to shareholders, after management at the smaller rivals said it's too low. Phelps Dodge fell 1/16 to 56 5/8. Asarco fell 1/16 to 22 11/16. Cyprus fell 1/4 to 17 9/16. Robocom Systems International Inc. (RIMS): The maker of warehouse-management software's fiscal fourth-quarter loss narrowed to 12 cents a share from a 13-cent loss a year ago. Revenue for the quarter ended May 31 fell to $1.9 million from $2.5 million last year. Robocom rose 1/2 to 1 7/8. Safety-Kleen Corp. (SK): The third-largest U.S. waste- disposal company agreed to acquire a unit of Valvoline Co. for an undisclosed price to enlarge its used-oil collection business. The purchase will solidify its No. 1 position in the used-oil collection and re-refining business. Safety-Kleen rose 1/16 to 12 7/8. Thomas & Betts Corp. (TNB): The maker of electronic components and connectors said it won't increase its $490 million bid for AFC Cable Systems Inc. (AFCX) to beat another offer. Cable and wire maker AFC said it will terminate the merger agreement with Thomas & Betts if its offer doesn't match the unnamed competitor's. Under that agreement, Thomas & Betts wins a $16 million termination fee. Thomas & Betts rose 7/16 to 42 13/16. AFC fell 3/8 to 35 1/2. Tickers: AFCX, JDSU, PD
