The latest on-line issue of The Economist has a good discussion of the pros/cons of central banks taking equity prices into it's calculations.

It's typical for equity and housing prices to bloom early in economic expansions, later to be followed by increases in general price levels. What's so unusual about this prolonged expansion is that the former has happened , but not the latter.
