Eric -
I think that DELL's storage strategy has been faltering and they had to say something. They made some big announcements about the partnership with DG Clariion, then did not produce any significant products. Now DG has been bought by EMC.

DELL is missing the key ingredient to be a serious storage player - the services component. Anyone can build the storage components - those designs are readily available. The trick is to get the system software and network expertise to make those solutions valuable for big customers. IBM sets the standard there, and CPQ is also very strong. HP has good products and services but has had some technical problems - they also used an OEM strategy, initially with DG, then EMC, then Fujitsu. EMC themselves have problems - they can't control the server side of the equation so they have a disadvantage.

DELL needs to keep making progress in their storage plans. I think Lambert's statement is a kind of lame excuse for the fact that DELL is a year off the pace they set for themselves.
