I think that the health care issue presents a much larger issue than corporate America pampering its employees in retirement. The fact remains that the baby boomers are a large percentage of the US population and approaching retirement. The current (normal) Boeing employee has to pay about $400 a month for his family to remain on Boeing medical benefits. The question that presents itself is that if the American public has to or is expected to cover its own medical insurance in retirement what is this going to do to the economy for those who will not carry decent insurance because they will be financially forced to rely on the US taxpayer? i.e. they can't afford the coverage. I think that there will be a significant reliance on those of us who are working to foot the bill in the form of taxes or paying for our own medical coverage (if we are young this may mean paying for our parents medical insurance). This is an interesting issue.

Consequently, over the next couple of decades this employment issue of medical coverage in retirement may pop up more frequently. I happen to think it is a good idea, especially for those that spent 20-30 years of their life with the same employer. Loyalty works both ways... I think employers owe this to their employees for the money saved by the company for employees who stay with the same company for so long. Boeing pays graduated benefits such as vacation time on years of service, how about some extra retirement benefits for this as well? Your thoughts?
