Actually, I will go ahead and answer your question about the value of a patent application, but then it's off to bed.

The answer to your question is that some inventions are best protected by trade secret.

The value of the patent application is dependent on the novelty of the science underlying it and on the size of the markets that are effectively addressed.

On the balance sheet, of course, it's the cost of preparing, filing, etc.
