Bob : I don't say it's an international conspiracy. That's not my thesis. Perhaps the bankers or their pals were short, themselves. Or else, someone wanted to buy a lot of gold at a cheap price and, for whatever reason, they obliged.

I simply can't go along with the incompetent government bureaucrat reason. It doesn't make sense to me. If they were incompetent they could have sold their gold into the market, like everyone else. They didn't have to make an announcement first. Not only did their action mess up the market it also diminished the value of their own residual gold holdings. And it upset all the African gold producing countries who were quick to complain about racist, or whatever, action. Even now, BOE remains intransigent and refuses to sell future gold "silently" like other Euroland countries.
