Actually, it did. Not just the 3d now, but the whole "windows approved" program from Microsoft for AMD and ohers. As a result, AMD gained credibility, Intel was forced to drastically lower prices (on the low end) and the total PC market expanded.

Microsoft gets the same license fee whether the computer being sold is a $399 emachine or a $3495 Compaq workstation (a little more if the workstation is loaded with NT), whereas Intel does a lot better on the Compaq. The low end market never would have exploded the way it did without Microsoft blessing AMD and forcing Intel to respond. In the end, Intel also benefited from the greater unit sales.
