Steven, Thought you'd get a kick out of the first real description of campus life from CW. His father has been out of town all week and got this yesterday and forwarded it to me. Hi Dad! I registered for classes, as I'm sure Mom told you. And I've made it to Friday, finally. Life is flat out WEIRD, but I'm sure you knew that. Last night (Mom doesn't know this yet!!! You get first dibs) I finally got to bed around 3:00. Then, at 3:30, sirens went off, the Beastie Boys were played at 120% full blast over the speakers, and all the advisors were running up and down the halls banging on the doors with pots and pans. It was time...for Grübel. Grübel is Brown's annual and official induction into the college (not the University, mind you!) It was a huge competition of teams of five--eleven of them--mine got 2nd place--to do just extremely weird things. Go to other colleges and yell things to keep them up. Cross rivers of tons of oatmeal by building a human bridge (Oatmeal gets really sticky when you're hot and sweaty. I took off my shirt before I got in, but it still got all over me), throw water balloons into the Weiss commons and swim in the nastiest water on campus: our very own Angel Fountain. Once you've done all this (running all the way across campus several times, for a total of about 4.5 miles of sprinting by the end of the night), you run back to Brown, and are greeted by cheering advisors, donuts and drinks for our Oatmeal-parched throats. (FYI: Only two members of each group actually had to dive headfirst into the Oatmeal to sacrifice themselves as the bridge. One had to cross and the other two helped her across. But Nick and I were the building blocks: the ones who became Oatmen for the morning.) We finished, like I said, 2nd Place, at 6:23AM. Then you calmed down, took a shower (45min) to get the Oatmeal out of your hair and off your legs and out from in between your -- well, just take my word for it, it was everywhere -- and then I got to bed and fell asleep about 7:30. At 8:00, the alarm clock went off, for a mandatory Campus Police orientation. Life is good... Cw
