I think that IP v6 can add QOS (Quality of Service) to IP connections. Until that becomes predominant, or IP over ATM (or pure ATM) is used for all connections, you'll risk having delays as your packets lose out to those of others and have to be retransmitted.

Multiple levels of QOS lets some transmissions, like voice, that have real time requirements, take precedence over ordinary data transmissions. This would avoid delays and breakups of telephone conversations.
