Log On America Seen to Have Potential

A U.S. telecom company is likely to invest into Internet service provider Log On America Inc., a company whose stock price has been hit recently along with other tech-sector firms.

The telecom company is expected to pay an estimated $25 million for a 10-percent stake in Log On, which is also authorized to supply local telephone service, said Business Week magazine in its September 13 edition, quoting sources close to the deal. Log On officials were not immediately available to comment.

The Inside Wall Street column said that this telecom company is expected to help Log On construct a $100-million network Internet and phone services in New England.

Also, telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks and Cisco Systems, the cash-flush manufacturer of equipment that directs traffic on the Internet, have formed alliances with Log On, the column reported.

The magazine said that as both an Internet service provider and a supplier of local telephone service, Log On is well positioned in its goal to be a one-stop shop for voice, data access and video transmission services.

The column also named medical device maker Micro Therapeutics as another attractive buy, partly because it represents the only pure public play in the neurovascular intervention market, says Sam Navarro, ING Barings Furman Selz analyst Sam Navarro said.

Micro Therapeutics, which makes devices that help treat problems such as blood clots, is a potential takeover target, with Guidant Corp. as the most likely suitor, the magazine said. Guidant officials were unable to be reached for comment.
