Hey Matt, I'm a Club Fatt member and a long time lurker here and I would like to share some thoughts on TOPP with you. I am the father of two boys, ages 4 and 7, who are "Pokemon crazy"(in their own words). The craze is about the cards, not the show, not any of the other assorted stuffed figures or what have you. All they care about is the cards. They collect them, they trade them, they make up their own "battles" between them. As I understand some of the older kids even use them to play the game they were designed for. Now when I heard a couple of weeks ago that Topps was bringing out a set of cards based on the TV show I got kind of excited as the suggested retail for the packs was to be $1.99. The cards that all the kids collect are usually around $8 a pack. But then after giving it some thought and remembering back to when I was a kid, I won't be too surprised if the kids don't give these new cards a warm reception. After all, they've been collecting the original cards since the spring and part of the thrill is hoping your pack contains a Charizard or another rare card. I'm sure Topps will sell some cards, but I don't believe the kids are going to go crazy over them. The last craze my kids went through was Beanie Babies, and no matter how many imitators were around(many were cheaper), all they ever wanted was the real ones. That said, while there may be some price appreciation in TOPP due to the release of the cards, I wouldn't expect a KIDE or GRIN like move. And don't you think the anticipation of the release is what brought TOPP to 52-week highs already? JMHO of course. If you need any more info on the Pokemon phenomenon I'd be glad to help.
