While Pete didn't mention TrashPoint in that interview, Amelia Willson of Merrill clearly did at the NYC confab-ulous. Imagine, Merrill had to choose between a powerful corporate finance client with money to burn or lil ole CheckFree for their Ebill. She said it was a very tough sell to top management. She also said that they really couldn't offer what CheckFree did. Pay-everyone was vital to Merrill. CheckFree had a service-oriented concept which was different from Microsoft's "just throw money at the problem" approach. Checkfree had more experience in this business.
There were other pro-CKFR advantages but I must admit I was busy doing other things and couldn't hear her entire speech. Her frankness (even admitting many of Merrill's early mistakes in this effort) and in-depth analysis of the problems and realities were much appreciated.
It was so great for a customer to free up time to talk to a bunch of diverse, unimportant, somewhat-neurotic investors. We are also indebted no end to a management (Kight, Shulman, etc.) that is nice enough to make a special out-of-town effort to keep us crazies informed -- I don't think many of you realize how unusual such a presentation to this type of audience is. I hope the quality of messages on the thread continues at a very high level and justifies and confirms that we are a group deserving of their efforts; and we spread the facts and valid opinions that in the long-run enhances Checkfree's overall effort to get better known without becoming a PR machine at the sacrifice of attention to the business.
