Electricity arrived in that town before the end of my Peace Corps term, and with it the great blessings of civilization. I remember the first television... the house was stuffed to overflowing; children piled in the windows. They watched, in rapt attention, but looking at the faces (which were a lot more interesting than the show) I could see that they couldn't begin to tell the difference between the commercials and the shows. All one confused, confusing mass of sound and image. Of course the kids memorized dozens of commercial jingles, though they had no idea what the products were, or what they were for.
