It is just not always practical to stop the discussion to provide the proofs, especially in a medium such as this one.

True. But when someone does stop the discussion to ask where in the blazes you got an idea like that, you really ought to be able to say something more convincing that "well, like I mean I sort of assumed, you know".

A legitimate generalization is one that you can credibly defend if challenged. Very simple.

Einstein was a proficient and highly educated physicist who based his theorizing on mathematical models of the universe. James Clerk Maxwell and other scientists of that era were approaching the same conclusions as Einstein, using the same knowledge base. Einstein was hardly employing unsupported generalizations. Physics is the most mathematical of sciences.
