The short story of Randy Weaver: A survivalist/white supremacist from northern Idaho. Comes to the government's attention when his wife Vicki writes a letter to the White House railing against the "Babylon" of modern America, squarely placing the blame on the Clinton administration and predicting Biblical-style retribution. Soon an ATF agent or informant approaches Randy at a gun show and requests that he saw off two shotguns for him to something less than the legal length. Weaver refuses. Agent/informant continues to pester Weaver, eventually Weaver gives in, after warning him that what he's asking is illegal. Stranger says "Don't worry," Weaver eventually saws off guns to approx. 1/4" less than arbitrary legal length. ATF approaches Weaver and tries to get him to infiltrate white separatist/survivalist group for them; Weaver tells them to get bent. Weaver is then indicted on weapons charges for shotguns. One day while he and his wife Vicki are on their way into town they stop to help an apparently broken-down camper by the side of the road and feds burst out of camper and arrest him. Court date is set and Weaver returns to his secluded cabin with family. With no warning and without Weaver's knowledge, the gov't moves up Weaver's court date, then when he fails to appear, issues a warrant. So, one evening, the Weaver's dog runs down the hill barking at something and Weaver's son Sammy and friend Kevin Harris start down the hill to find out what the commotion is when the dog is suddenly shot. Sammy starts running down the hill yelling "Hey, you shot my dog!" when he is shot in the arm. He turns around and starts to run back up the hill and is shot in the back and killed. Harris fires a wild shot into the trees and sprints back up the hill. Somewhere at this point, a federal agent is shot and killed. The original claim is that Sammy (who was unarmed) shot him, then that Harris' wild shot hit him. The ballistic evidence later shows that he was probably shot by another agent. Later, as Randy Weaver, Kevin Harris and Randy's 16 year old daughter Sara are walking towards the shed where they'd placed Sammy's body, Weaver is shot in the upper arm by a sniper. Sara shields him with her own body as they rush back to the cabin. Weaver's wife Vicki, standing in the doorway, is then shot through the head by agent Lon Horiuchi and dies instantly. At this point, the Weavers begin shouting to the agents, but receive no response. They spend the next six days crawling around the cabin fearing for their lives. Finally, over the objections of the agents, former Green Beret (as was Weaver) Bo Gritz goes in and brings out the survivors. The gov't put on a show trial in Boise, in which Harris is charged with the murder of the fed agent, and both Weaver and Harris are charged with a variety of Federal crimes. After the prosecution case, the defense rests without calling a single witness, and the jury solely on the basis of the clear lies of the government's version of the story acquits everybody of everything. Weaver is eventually convicted on two charges; failure to appear, and violating bail. Understand; the Federal gov't murdered this man's son and wife. Of that the evidence is clear. And understand; the only reason that we know the real story is because someone survived. I'm willing to bet that if the feds had had their way about it there would have been no survivors, and would have then been virtually no opportunity to counter the official version of events. You know, like Waco...
