I don't think that Greenspan is going to adjust interest rates with the stock market values as playing a major input to any such decision. Other factors are more important to decide on interest rate levels.

Greenspan does have a legitimate concern on the historically high stock market values. The concern being that a big drop in the stock values would throttle consumer spending and could make a recession much more serious than it would have otherwise been.

jhg_in_kc, In my comments on Greenspan's recent speech, I wasn't implying any "conspiracy theory". I must admit, that would be way beyond my ability to analyze the situation.

However, Greenspan was saying that so many investors have made money in the markets that they are now spending us into a period of inflation. So, given this is true, the Fed decides to take the market down, and in so doing, destroys investor wealth and, thus his ability to spend money. Heck, given this is the case, why not impose wage and price freezes? (Of course, this isn't the responsibility of the Fed.)This is another way to control inflation, at least in the near term.

IMO, if the Fed decides to take the market down, its a "targeted" move at selected members of our society. This is not the way to manage the economy...at least IMO.

In any event, I don't think Greenspan will move as suggested by his comments. As I said before, the politics of Wall Street will prevent this from happening.

JHG,

Perhaps, a handful of Prozac are in order.

Alan went to a nice resort to shoot the shit with some of his buddies.

Big deal. Most of us just don't care.

But if you want to blow a gasket, that's your prerogative.

And should you decide that calm, rational, sober thought is in order, just ask yourself if anyone else could have done a better job of shepherding the US and global economies during the past decade.

Hope you enjoyed your little snit.
Ian.
