I sell covered calls, I buy calls and puts in my IRA. There is no governmental obsticle to doing any of this in an IRA. If a particular brokerage firm does not allow the purchase of puts in an IRA, call their complaince dept and tell them you are going to switch firms if they do not allo you to buy puts in your IRA account. Most firms allow this for their regular customers. I have bought puts in my IRA account for the past 5 years or more.

You're right about selling covered puts though--covered puts are against a short position which is not allowed in an IRA account.
