One call I didn't understand yesterday was the guy who owns an S&P index fund and asked about shorting SPY. Bob said the IRS would frown on this, looking at them as "like" securities. Yet isn't this the same strategy Bob has been advocating in the event of a bear market? Also, it would only become a tax problem if the guy bought one and sold the other at the same time, or within 30 days, which I don't think is what he intended. And, of course, it would never be a tax problem if it took place in a IRA or other tax-sheltered account. Can anyone enlighten?
