But I think we don't know whether the low serotonin level associated with PTS (post-traumatic stress disorder) existed before the abuse, and triggered the abuse, or if low serotonin resulted from the abuse. We know that there are pecking orders in animals, we don't want to think that human families are capable of such things as tormenting the weakest members.

I recently read that mothers of twins favor the more attractive and/or healthier twin - usually one and the same, as what we call beauty is also what we call health. It stands to "reason" that the most attractive and healthiest child isn't the one that is abused.

I am sure we'll know the answers to these questions some day, but they make me uncomfortable while fascinating me. I dread a "eugenics" campaign based on neurochemistry. We (human beings) have tried to eradicate populations based on color, language and religion, is it so unthinkable that we might decide that people with poor neurochemistry or brain structure shouldn't reproduce?
