While waiting for the personal VCR to become the rage, I'm beginning to get the idea that the impact of music storage on disk drives may be even quicker to arrive. Does anyone know whether it would yet be practical to store and play the music from my 300 CD jukebox on my computer? Is it likely that this type of application would be done from the PC or will we see stand alone players with disk drives for this purpose (and at what cost)?
With the huge proliferation of sites offerring MP3 recordings and talk such as the article in the latest Barrons (I believe that's where I read it) about record companies being at risk of being entirely bypassed by artists offerring over the internet, and with the age group into music being early adopters of technology, this area is starting to sound very exciting.
Seems to me as if the disk drive industry is in the cross hairs of several very powerful convergent trends-cheap PCs, audio, the personal VCR. Having recently acquired a camcorder with the IE 1394 interface for downloading to the PC, both digital photography and camcorders should probably be added to the list. I don't believe any of these areas are either small or very far away. Most exciting they scream for the largest drives available today which just don't cost that much more than a low end drive. When the world figures all this out, my theory is that the drive companies will be capable of very quickly adding the capacity to maintain a cutthroat environment, but that HTCH will be a great beneficiary.
Last, I keep looking at MGI software which is in a few of the right places and wondering if we're missing a golden opportunity.
Views on all of this welcome! -Z
