Placer Dome appoints Jay Taylor as president

Mr. John Willson reports
Placer Dome Inc. has appointed Jay K. Taylor as president of the
corporation. John Willson remains chief executive officer until he steps
down by the company's next annual general meeting at which time Mr. Taylor
will assume the duties of chief executive officer. Mr. Taylor was also
appointed to the board of directors.
"I'm delighted by the board's decision for succession," said Mr. Willson,
chief executive officer. "As a member of Placer Dome's executive team, Jay
has played a key role in Placer Dome's achievement as a worldwide leader in
the gold industry. I am confident that he has both the vision and depth of
operational experience to assume the leadership of Placer Dome when I step
down."
Mr. Taylor, age 53, joined Placer Development Limited, a predecessor
company, in 1972. Most recently, he held the position of executive
vice-president, Placer Dome North America. Previously, he held positions as
president and CEO of Placer Dome United States, and president and CEO of
Placer Dome Latin America, where he directed Placer Dome's first venture
into Chile in 1989. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Mr.
Taylor holds a master of engineering in mining and a bachelor of applied
science in geological engineering.
"I am proud to have the opportunity to lead such a great company whose
success is due to our outstanding people and assets," said Mr. Taylor.
"Under John's leadership, we have tripled our reserves, seen a dramatic
improvement in the quality of our mine portfolio, achieved a better cost
structure, and revamped our business focus and corporate culture. I look
forward to delivering on our commitment to building value for our
shareholders."
Placer Dome also appointed Donald Rose, corporate secretary, to the board
of directors effective immediately. In order to comply with the Canada
Business Corporations Act an additional Canadian director must be added to
the bard.
