That is the beauty of the technology, the holographic optics, allows to capture a full-finger "single digit" with that small size. The patented holographic optical elements (HOE's) eliminate distortion and converge the output directly onto the CCD and CMOS camera in that short focal length.

This small footprint can then be put into large packages for law
enforcement, civil enrollment applications; integrated with a smart card or 2-D bar code reader for access, border control, or Point-of-Sale applications; or sold as an OEM component for integration into other vendors solutions.


I might add that APT's boast is that they can do this at low cost.
