Dear Capt-- If your IRA is at a firm that doesn't allow put buying, you ought to switch. By puts to protects an investment is a very useful stratgey to employ. If you are at a firm that limits your ability to employ different strategies, switch. And, don't be shy about telling a supervisor at Waterhouse about your problem.
