The Sudan pipeline is completely underground. It was built by Chinese convicts (officially called "petroleum engineers"). Their reward after completing the pipeline is freedom and US$1000. Chinese soldiers and convicts together with Sudanese militia are now protecting the oil fields and the pipeline against the rebels.
