Paul,

I was in the main CompUSA in downtown Chicago - on Chicago St ! - and likewise they had 600 MHz Pentium ///s
on display and for sale - but no one there ever heard of an "Athlon" !

When I asked, the sales people looked at me weird - as if I was from California !

Ah yes, California, land of fruits and nuts (OK, flakes too). Good thing we have that earthquake thing or everybody would be out here!

Chicago! Isn't that Jerry's origins?

Tony

Paul, San Jose Mercury News reports this morning that Intel is expected to announce at IDF this week that they are ready to ship engineering samples of Merced! I'm guessing that Barrett and all the rest have really turned up the heat in the past few months on "getting it right the first time", or getting it in best possible shape before announcing/shipping, etc. There have been a few black eyes in the last few months, but I don't expect a company like Intel to continue to tolerate them.

Intel to outline new chip plans
At the Intel Developers Forum in Palm Springs
this week, Intel Corp. is expected to outline its
plans for entering the communications chip
market and announce that it is ready to ship
engineering samples of its first 64-bit
processor, known as Merced. The
communications chips will be programmable
and are designed to manage a variety of
high-speed communications within a corporate
network. The Santa Clara-based chip giant also
intends to showcase innovative PC designs and
home networking systems in a conference
exhibit called the Connected Concept House.
