Well, Michael, as I said, my direct experience of Academe is a bit out of date. I received a PhD from Columbia in 1975. I taught Russian history, briefly, at the State University in Buffalo in the 1970's. Could not take a permanent appointment (although it was offered)because it was 350 miles away from home, and my husband didn't care for week-end marriage. Taught, as an adjunct, at a few local colleges (NYC area) and worked as an administrator at Columbia's Harriman Institute for the Study of the Soviet Union. After my husband's death, I left Academe entirely, and began working as a journalist in Washington, D.C.

As for the "yawn" -- please bear in mind that there are many, many, many political threads on SI. I used to post on some of them, and discovered that there are many, many, many posters who are not interested in anything but politics. Who are obsessed by politics, in fact, and who repeat themselves over and over and over and over again....(This applies to so-called "liberals" as well as to soi-disant "conservatives," incidentally.)
