A metalloprotease is an enzyme that 1) contains a metal center and 2) cleaves protein. The medicinal chemistry of these is hot because "matrix metalloproteases" (the ones that remodel collagen, the basic structural stuff of joints, ligaments, lung tissue etc.) are key players in degenerative diseases of cartilage, like osteo and emphysema. So MMP inhibitors are being developed as strong new drugs to arrest the arthritides, emphysema ... such diseases.
