We took the Garden State Turnpike and New Jersey Turnpike through New Jersey, crossing the Hudson at the Tapaan Zee bridge, skirting far around New York City, much further than we needed to. My husband has a horror of New York City. I do want to go to Manhatten this fall, but I will take the train, and probably do it alone.

<That is something I'd like to do. That's neat. I really enjoyed seeing the dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico. I can only imagine what whales would be like up close.>

Trust me... you would really enjoy the whales....(-:

Easy enough to get to Nova Scotia to see the whales. From where you are, it would be a bit of a marathon drive though. However, it might be kind of fun if you cut through the Adirondacks, Vermont, N.H. and Maine... into N.B. and took the ferry across from St. John to Digby, N.S. and then drove up to Brier Island which is relatively close by. You can take whale-watch trips from the N.B. side, but I kind of think that Brier Island is the real mecca for seeing whales... maybe Grand Manan Island off the N.B. shore is as good. Don't know for sure.

There is a ferry that crosses the Delaware Bay, from the Jersey coast at Cape May to the Delmarva peninsula at Lewes, Delaware. It is very nice, and takes a little over an hour. Sometimes, one can sit with a cool beverage and watch dolphins frolic in the sun...
