Most regular people don't have any stock at all. They might have a 401k that doesn't play into their day to day finances. A lot of my yuppie friends have stocks, but a lot of times they invest in stuff that doesn't make them too much money, or they attempt to trade and thus lose money.

I think the "wealth effect" may be a funtion of full employment and job security. Why save if you know you can find a new job right away should something happen? Why not just charge up the credit card at Circuit City if you feel secure in your income stream?
