I agree fully. We love to hate 'em but they do provide that balance that makes the market work....when they play by the rules and don't use manipulation to gain advantage.

In fact, I understand MM's are allowed to short in order to keep orderly markets. Don't want the price to spike unnaturally or out of control just 'cause MM's are out of shares as it can swing just as fast the other way as the greedy sell fast to take their profits on the spike.

Shorting, when used logically and not for abuse of a stock is vital to a strong and vital market...no question.

No short selling? no stock market, it would be that simple! Volatility would go out of sight, there would be absolutely no bid support on tough days and absolutely no stock for sale on good days. shorts are part of what makes the stock market world go around.

Are you speaking of Canadian short sellers or U.S. Market Makers? We need MM to make a market for BBs, but I would question if we need the Canadians short sellers. If the Canadian short sellers were so important to the stock market, I believe that U.S. investors would be able to sell penny stocks short also. IMO
