""This is the reason for the buying today in ATHM:
Excite is offering free long distance phone calls over the net. ""

Ya, and CNBC just had a 10 minute interview with excite content manager about the free long distance. Should be a plus to out stock price.

Re: Voice Chat...

YHOO has had that for a while now. YHOO sets the trends and standards for portals and the rest just follow the leader...

Maybe all the portals need to release free long distance PRs now about their voice chat systems to try getting NTOP reactions by the general public.

Mike,
I also don't think the late move was due to the voice-over-internet capabilities Excite is developing--it has been obvious for quite a while that Excite has been a leader in innovative portal technologies and personalization (which is reflected in its well-above-average visit durations. I think it may have been related to the FCC's inquiry into ATT's cable reach--the market may believe that contrary to earlier thoughts, it is not in Excite@Home's best interest to have too many eggs in the ATT basket. In any event, the move was welcome and hopefully a portent of good things to come.
