I don't know if LUMM will actually achieve what they have set out to do [I have no reasons to either believe or disbelieve at this time] or what they have claimed they will do. What I do know is this: LUMM has helped define a set of goals - in principle, at least - that need to be reached. I.e., optics, especially wavelength tuning and manipulation, need to be scaled down in size to manageable form factors if we are to see a shift to photonic networking within the enterprise and in the home.

As a networking professional I wish them luck, and would like to see them, and others in their class with similar aspirations, succeed. As it stands now, DWDM network elements are just a tad more manageable than rooftop air conditioning chillers, and just about as expensive when installed. There is a huge oppotunity for some immediate improvements in this space.
