Sony's I-Frame encoder and digital interoperability.......

...The Pro-MPEG demo saw the first use of Sony's new MPEG recorder, working at 50Mbps I frame, which linked directly to a Quantel server also using 50Mbps I frame MPEG. The EBU/SMPTE Taskforce recommended 50Mbps operation as a key operating point for both MPEG and DV in the studio environment. DVCPRO already has 25 and 50Mbps versions -- and a 100Mbps version, DVCPRO-HD, was also shown at NAB...

"For a number of years, companies have wished for true digital interoperability and connectivity. But the professional video industry has not had the capability to move compressed video seamlessly from one company's device to another's. With the new SMPTE 305M specification for SDTI, we have an agreed-upon interface standard for connectivity between standards-based DV devices," said Brinkman.

As a further demonstration of Panasonic's wish to see the DVCPRO family of formats in the open arena, it encouraged other manufacturers to make DVCPRO chipsets. Three companies now doing so exhibited at the Interoperability Pavilion -- C-Cube, Zoran and Divio.
