Trying to dislodge office is akin to starting a newspaper in Wahington DC for the throngs who hate the Post.

I don't think they're trying to dislodge Office directly, because they say as much in their press release. To stretch your metaphor slightly<g>, I think it's more akin to saying, "A new newspaper would just kill more trees, let's start CNN. People will get most of the news they read in the paper for free (the parts they don't get, they probably don't care much about), and will pay for it in...other ways!"

As for the DOJ, I sort of agree with you. Microsoft has a monopoly on the present, but a good M$ lawyer would point out that they won't have a monopoly on the future and really would use this deal to support that argument. Fortunately, I don't think it would win M$' case for them...they've done too many evil things<g>.
