Re: "Every CPU I've ever worked on booted at first silicon. There is nothing unusual about that. What is surprising is that Intel appears desperate to show Merced off so quickly.

What clock speed is it running at?"

Every one booted at first silicon? Never a bad fracture or bad mask set. How many were completely new architectures?Never a problem?? I doubt it.

Sure Intel is in a real hurry to show one off, but AMD would have been in just as big a hurry if they had one that would run. They didn't for nearly a year or they would have shown it. Why did they do a vapor intro in June if they weren't desperate? Why did they do a vapor re-intro in August if they weren't desperate? All Intel really needs to do is put a sample unit in HP's hands. I think they are showing off that they can do in 2 weeks with A0 silicon what AMD took nearly a year and who knows how many silicon spins to do with an established architecture.

All this assumes that Intel really does do a demo tomorrow (or at least soon). Your guess is (almost) as good as mine.

<What clock speed is it running at?>

Probably at some speed faster than your favorite Merced simulator! (heh heh)
