(COMTEX) B: INPRISE: Inprise announces commitment to Linux
B: INPRISE: Inprise announces commitment to Linux

AUG 17, 1999, M2 Communications - Inprise today announced the complete
results of a major survey into the needs of Linux developers. With more
than 75 per cent of over 24,000 respondents planning to develop
application level projects, and 23 per cent considering server-side
CORBA development, Inprise responded by announcing the first
commercially available CORBA solution for Linux.

In providing developers with a reliable and supported way of linking
standalone Linux applications into back-end platforms, data and the
Web, Inprise is aiming to kickstart mainstream commercial use of Linux
for real-world enterprise applications. Visibroker for Linux, a new
version of Inprise's award-winning object request broker is available
immediately. The company intends to release JBuilder for Linux, an
upcoming version of its Java development tool, later this year.

Over 24,000 respondents to Inprise's survey indicated that Linux is a
critical operating system for their customers moving forward. The
results also indicate that the majority of developers participating in
the survey are planning application development and client server
database development projects on Linux. According to a recent report by
International Data Corporation, because applications drive operating
system sales, having more applications available on Linux will drive
Linux in Enterprise computing.

"We have now been shipping InterBase for Linux for over a year. With
today's announcement of VisiBroker for Linux, customers now have access
to a Linux version of a leading CORBA ORB for distributing and
deploying applications across multiple platforms," said Dale Fuller,
interim president and CEO of Inprise Corporation. "Based on the
tremendous feedback from our survey, we are also assessing which
additional tools and technologies Inprise will be extending to this
expanding market."

"As a developer, I am thrilled that Inprise will be bringing the ease
of use, elegance and efficiency of its Borland tools heritage to the
Linux marketplace. These Linux tools will give developers the
capabilities we want and need to further mainstream the adoption of the
Linux platform for Internet application development. Linux is about new
options and directions on the Internet; Inprise will help get us there
faster," said Chris Staszak, director of technology for an online
trading community for small businesses.
