Also, most programmers would not be checking a date field for nines to check for end of file. This would be about as smart as checking an amount field for nines (do any sales systems crash if they sell an amount of $9,999.99?). They would be checking a larger field or multiple fields for all nines.

I would agree with you 100% that it is not a smart programmer that would program this date code for this reason. But the chance is always there. As a person involved in a Y2K testing team, this is a valid date pattern that Y2K teams are looking for. So even though its not too likley, there are always stupid people out there somewhere that might have just tried this trick.
