When we were driving through Maine to Canada, we decided to take the scenic route along the coast. It took us 3 hours of bumper to bumper traffic to go thirty miles. Tourists as far as the eye can see. I don't think it qualifies as wide open spaces to anyone who's not from New York.

Maybe in the winter.
