U.S., Vietnam to Finalize Trade Pact

August 25, 1999

Xinhua via NewsEdge Corporation : WASHINGTON (Aug. 24) XINHUA - The United States and Vietnam will try to put the finishing touches on a landmark trade pact when their officials meet in Washington this week, a spokeswoman for the U.S. trade representative's office said Tuesday.

The spokeswoman said the trade pact, which was reached preliminarily last month in Hanoi, would be finalized in details by officials of the two countries.

"I don't know if we'll sign it this week, but we'll continue to work toward finalizing the details," she said.

The final agreement on the trade pact would clear the way for Washington to establish normal trade relations with Hanoi, which would mean that Vietnamese goods would be allowed to enter the United States at the same low tariff levels accorded other countries.

Vietnam would also be required to open its market over time to U.S. goods, services and investments and make it easier for U.S. firms to do business there.

Meetings to fine-tune last month's preliminary pact begin Wednesday and could continue through the rest of the week.

Once the agreement was finalized, the White House still would have to send it to Congress for approval.
