**China Data/Multimedia Users to Number 60 Mln by 2005 - Report

(8/30/99) Zhou Jianming, director of the Ministry of Information Industry?s
Telecommunications Planning Institute, said that by 2005 the total number of data
and multimedia telecommunications subscribers in China would reach 60 million,
according to the August 27 Jisuanji Shijie (China Computerworld).

Specifically, fixed phone users are projected to total more than 240 mln by 2005, and
exceed 240 mln by 2010. Mobile telephone subscribers will reach 160-180 mln by
2005 and top 300 mln in 2010.

There will be from 50-60 mln data and multimedia subscribers by 2005 and more than
280 mln by 2010. Zhou said that overall, total demand for telecom services in 2010
will be five times that of the year 2000.

Zhou said that around 2005, demand for wideband services would surpass that for
voice communications. Also, mainstream long-distance backbone transmission will
switch from the current synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) to wavelength division
multiplexing (WDM).

By 2005, the backbone networks of the major telecommunications operators in China
will adopt large quantities of network equipment such as WDM transmission
systems, high-capacity asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches and (or) gigabit
routers to deploy the networks. WDM optical transmission networks will take full
advantage of this high bandwidth.

In addition, China?s telecom networks are expected to switch over from using narrow
band to wideband conduits.
