Tom, I think we are not that far apart in our assessment of the same elephant. Time/technology/excellence seem the key determinants in 'place value' for the field of entrants. My money remains with ATHM. Even our key questions look about the same to me. And we both agree it will be an exciting event to watch unfold.

No doubt sub fees will drop and content/access speed WILL matter a lot. Is AOL awesome at packaging/marketing, yes. Will they stay top dog? They have the predicament of needing to retire their horse wagons over time and acquire internal combustion engines. Doable, but the pressure builds, the field levels, as E@H rolls out and grabs headlines and heads.

Further, with phone rates on the fast track of decline I see cable as a prized cash cow for T and their weight behind E@H for at least the next 2-3 years. Exclusively? Probably not, but I can't see them doing anything to jinx ATHM. As you pointed out, the new host of services from E@H may be what really puts distance between them and other services over the next several months/years. So far it looks like they are getting high marks.

The cable access is not available here, but a few towns away a friend has it, a TCI exec. I know has it, and both will never go back to dial-up or AOL. Personally, I see AOL around in the future, but I do not see them as pre-destined to have the prime spot. Pressure is the stuff deals are made of. imHo :-)

Good points! Thanks for the exchange.
