Wal-Mart Reports August Sales
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., (NYSE: WMT - news) reported net sales for the four week period ended August 27, 1999, of $13,025,000,000, an increase of 26.9% from the $10,263,000,000 in the similar period in the prior year. Sales for the thirty week period were $86,636,000,000, an increase of 16.9% from the $74,140,000,000 in the similar period in the prior year.
Sam's Clubs sales for the four-week period were $1,854,000,000 up 9.3% from sales of $1,696,000,000 in the similar prior year period. Club sales for the thirty weeks of $13,656,000,000 were up 9.1% from the $12,514,000,000 in the similar prior year period.
Comparable sales for the periods ended August 27, 1999, were as follows:

As of August 31, 1999, the Company had 1836 Wal-Mart stores, 636 Supercenters, and 453 Sam's Clubs in the United States. Internationally, the Company operated units in Argentina (13), Brazil (14), Canada (159), Germany (95), Mexico (435), Puerto Rico (15), and United Kingdom (229) and under joint venture agreements in China (6) and Korea (5). Wal-Mart employs more than 815,000 Associates in the U.S. and 220,000 internationally. Its securities are listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges.
